POETRY CORNER

SPLIT by Bebe DeMara

You’ve chased
a silver gasp
to stir some motion, call
anytime anytime from a burning tongue
Stretched gradient, straight like
your achy legs, fit to fit itself–malleable woman like the first clay,
& red, too.
Red flush, Peri, bitten white window & a leather soft…
Whispered into feather frantic premonition (unsure, tentative)–woman of a sparked idea
that burns the writing hand,
that severs it at the wrist, like proffer…
Peeled fold, woman fragmented,
woman, split,
like God,
In the shared bed, stripping something rawer,
shared bed to
solitary limbs grown thinking,
reaching in the crevice she can’t shrink to fill. Woman
secret, waking again. Woman, a thousand, a billion, like
God. Because & solely because,
warding off that last dying
Because & solely–
Woman metamorphic in the face of stillness,
Capering to the song of her crying
out.

Poet’s statement
Bebe DeMara was born in Brazil and began writing at an early age, inspired by the Rock & Roll and Beat movements of the 50s and 60s.
