The Nourish KarmaBank Makers' Market is a new event that showcases work from refugee artists from Ukraine, Afghanistan, Iran & Saudi Arabia. Thanks to our coop with the RBKC Street Trading Office, Open Art Spaces, & Kensington + Chelsea Art Week, a Portobello Market stall becomes a vehicle of female empowerment.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
"I am Ukrainian, Lilia Maksimenko, born and raised in the West of Ukraine, the city of Mukachevo. I arrived in London on April 19, 2022. I create art with joy and love. Art is my love and my dream of life. My goal and dream is to please myself, people, the whole world with my art and receive recognition and money to create new arts and better ideas, dream projects and even better to please everyone :)"
WHY PAINT A ROOSTER?
"I paint a rooster because it is a revered bird in Ukraine, a symbol of good, a harbinger of the early dawn, sun, fire, the owner of his home, his farm. With his wailing he awakens the celestial sun from a night's sleep and foretells dawn. According to popular belief, the rooster's cry drives away all evil. This motif in Ukrainian folk tales and legends, the cry of the rooster is the culmination of magical times, the victory of light over darkness."
HOW DOES THIS SUPPORT UKRAINIANS....AND EVERYONE ELSE?
"I drew a rooster in the colors of Ukrainian blue and yellow and the tail of a rooster resembles a trident symbol on a flag, which announces that dawn has come, that good has defeated evil. And now came a new, kind, peaceful, calm, happy dawn in Ukraine and around the world on Planet Earth for all people."
