A little bit about us, we are a fledgling theatre company working on the one-act play, ‘Overtones’ by Alice Gerstenberg written in 1915. Whilst a period piece set in the upper middle class ranks of American society, we are excited to stage the insightful and often hilarious dialogue which challenges a modern audience to consider the pressure that still exists today to perform societally expected roles.

Plus, Alice was groundbreaking as a playwright in that this was the first time that the inner and outer selves of a character were performed by two different actors onstage in the American theatre. In this way the play gives voice to the suppressed yearnings of women in the early 20th century while shining a light on how little has changed today. Harriet and Margaret do all the right things while ignoring Hetty and Maggie, their inner selves, trying to get them to do what they really want. Who will win in this battle of wits in a world in which women are always at a loss.

Our team is:

Harriet - Havilah Davis

Hetty - Ciara Lane

Margaret - Emma Abrahams

Maggie - Jenny Coate

Directed by - Isobel Jacob

One joy of the piece is that it only uses a table, two chairs and a tea set and requires minimal lighting/sound, so, technically, it lends itself to a stripped back design. We are eager to embrace a more immersive experience by placing the characters within a tea house.
